Many young people are passionate about changing the world we live in. When adults support young people as they organize to create social change, they are sharing power, one of the five elements of a developmental relationship.

Whether it’s an organized protest or simply stepping forward to speak about something they believe in, activism can help young people nurture leadership skills, learn to deal with setbacks, and learn that they can make a difference in the world.

We recently polled our subscribers and our social media followers about the degree and kinds of activism young people in their program or school have been involved in. In the survey, we asked the following questions:

  1. Are young people in your community pushing for social change on issues that matter to them?
  2. If so, what issue or issues are young people working to address?
  3. What approach is your school, youth program, or other organization taking to the youth activism that is happening in your community?

We received many varied answers that were tallied and grouped together by themes. The results of the poll are in the infographic below:
